Both horses have reportedly taken very well to their work in the lead-up to the featured country cup, and carry similar form into the race having failed to return to peak condition through several Spring Carnival starts.

Rising Romance resumed for a close second behind Black Heart Bart in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m), but has since failed to make much of an impact through four subsequent starts; running eighth in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) last time out on November 5th.

Pilote d’Essai resumed for consecutive second-place finishes in the VRC Member Daniel Maher Handicap (1400m) and Westar Trucks Handicap (1500m), before placing fifth in the Spring Is The Season Handicap (1700m) on September 10th.

Progressing to second behind Plot The Course in the Alannah Hill BM90 (1600m) on October 12th, the Oasis Dream entire was last seen running a lacklustre ninth in the Twitter Trophy (1800m) at Flemington on Crown Oaks Day.

Fennessy has been pleased with the form displayed by both horses in recent work, but believes good barrier draws may mean the difference in success in the Ballarat Cup 2016.

“They’ve done most of their work here (at Flemington),” Fennessy told Racing Victoria.

“We were happy with her (Rising Romance) before her last couple of runs, she’s just got to get her old form back and she’ll be hard to beat.

“I’m sure (Pilote d’Essai is) a horse that the distance will suit him. Ridden up on the speed, I think he’ll be a lot harder to beat.

“I think he’s been getting too far back in his races of late. With a slower tempo in this race, he should be able to travel.

“Hopefully he draws a barrier because he’s been trapped deep quite a bit.”

Included amongst 28 nominations on Monday, both Rising Romance and Pilote d’Essai are expected to be confirmed in a capacity Ballarat Cup field of eighteen by midday, Wednesday.
