Having returned to racing in typically strong form through the 2014 Spring Racing Calendar, Spinderbella ($5.50) has opened as and maintained status as outright favourite in Ballarat Cup betting markets ahead of Tuscan Fire ($6.50), Vilanova ($8) and At First Sight ($9) with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.

Will Spinderbella justify favouritism and win the 2014 Ballarat Cup, or will one of her classy rivals find the line in the clear?

1st

Vilanova ($8)

Claiming three wins and a further nine minor places from his 28 competitive appearances on course so far, Vilanova is yet to hit peak condition over five starts this time in but is arguably offered his best chance of returning to the winner’s circle in the 2014 Ballarat Cup. A standout performer for trainer Chris Waller over the 2014 Winter Carnival, the Commands gelding ran fourth in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) before charging home to win the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) at long odds on May 24th. Returning to the paddock after placing a credible third in the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) on June 7th, Vilanova will leave from the ideal barrier 2 in the 2014 Ballarat Cup and arguably offers punters the best value for money at current $8 odds for success.

2nd

Tuscan Fire ($6.50)

A Group 1 competitor over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, Tuscan Fire’s class is sure to count for a lot in the 2014 Ballarat Cup and is more than worth consideration for a bet this weekend. Securing an impressive race record of nine wins and 18 minor places from his 52 appearances at the races to date, the Tuscanos gelding failed to beat a single runner home in the Listed Seymour Cup (1600m) first-up this time but has progressed well having finished fourth in the Listed James Boag’s Premium Stakes (1800m) most recently on Melbourne Cup Day. Allocated the rails draw, Tuscan Fire has been confirmed to be partnered by leading jockey Kerrin McEvoy in the 2014 Ballarat Cup.

3rd

Hvasstan ($21)

Arguably available at an overs quote of $21 for success or $6 to finish in the top three in the Ballarat Cup, Hvasstan has been charged with overcoming the wide and awkward barrier 19 but is sure to have his chances boosted by in-form jockey Craig Newitt. Securing four wins and as many minor places over his 30-start career so far, the Fastnet Rock entire ran second in a minor over 1500m first-up this time, and while unable to figure in either of the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) or Moe Cup (2050m), has returned to competitive form in finishing sixth amongst a talented field in the City Jeep Handicap (2040m) and fourth in the Secondbite Plate (2000m) at Flemington last time out on Stakes Day.
