Returning to racing in exceptional form over the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, trainer Robert Smerdon is confident the running conditions of Saturday’s Listed Ballarat Cup (2200m) will play into the strengths of classy mare Spinderbella.
Finishing a close second in a minor over 1600m first-up on September 17th, Spinderbella charged home to take out the Troa Supports Jockeys Trust (1800m) before overcoming an early check to finish third in the Inglis Pinker Pinker Plate (2080m) on October 10th.
Having returned to the winner’s circle in the LF Sign Group Handicap (2040m) last time out on October 24th, the Spinning World mare has been charged with carrying just 54kgs in the 2014 Ballarat Cup and will leave from the ideal barrier 3; two factors Smerdon is confident are key in a successful tilt.
“The barrier and the weight should give her a good run for a long way, so that puts her right in it and her record beyond 1600 is really good,” Smerdon told Racing Ahead.
“She’s only had one miss and there were excuses that night at Cranbourne when things didn’t work out that well.
“Her performances beyond 1600 are really good and she won over this distance at this track 12 months ago, albeit in lower grade.
“She’s probably still emerging. I’m not quite sure of her full potential, but because she’s lightly-raced she gets into this race right down the bottom of the handicaps and that can help them.”
More than stamping her claims as one to watch over her maiden racing preparation through the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, Spinderbella placed a credible fourth amongst classy competition in the United Insurance Group Maiden (1313m) on debut on September 5th; continuing to work towards three impressive race wins back-to-back in October and November.
Having also confirmed Electric Fusion in the 2014 Ballarat Cup final field, Smerdon conceded the allocation of the wide and awkward barrier 17 may be too great a task for the five-year-old to overcome.
“Since his last run we’ve got back to schooling him,” Smerdon said.
“That seemed to help him last time, so I’m hoping we see a lift in his form out of that but the barrier is going to make it difficult for him.”
Confirmed to be partnered by in-form jockey Chad Schofield, Spinderbella is currently rated a $5.50 chance for success in the 2014 Ballarat Cup; figuring as sole occupant of the top line of betting with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au, while Electric Fusion can be taken at a particularly generous quote of $12.
