Trainer Mike Moroney is confident Shenzhou Steeds has what it takes to win the Listed Ballarat Cup at Ballarat Racecourse this Sunday November 25, 2012.
Shenzhou Steeds has won seven of his 20 race starts and has earned more than $425,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.
The five-year-old placed third in the $100,000 Kyneton Cup last start and will be looking to go two better in the 2012 Ballarat Cup.
“He looks bright, he looks well and we’ve just ticked him over,” Moroney said.
“We went to Kyneton thinking that if he disappointed there we would pull up stumps, but we thought he went well enough to warrant a chance of running in the Ballarat Cup.
“He just got shuffled and he just got held up. He didn’t get the best of luck in running.
“I don’t know whether he would have beaten the winner but it probably cost him running second.”
Shenzhou Steeds won his last race in June this year, when he won the Listed Caloundra Cup at the Sunshine Coast.
Prior to that he claimed victory in the Listed Ipswich Cup on June 16, 2012.
Moroney predicts that Shenzhou Steeds will be at his best over the 2012 Ballarat Cup’s 2,200 metre distance.
“He’s won at a mile-and-a-half (2400m) but I’ve just got a little doubt whether that’s really his preferred trip,” he said.
